The red-brown dance fly ( Empis stercorea ) is a fly from the family of dance flies (Empididae).

features

The red-brown dance fly is a large species of the genus Empis . The males reach a body length of 5.2 to 7.5 mm and a wing length of 6.6 to 9 mm. The females reach 6.8 to 9.2 mm and a wing length of 7 to 8.3 mm. The wings are almost transparent with dark, yellowish wing veins near the base and a distinct brownish costal spot . The thorax is yellow to reddish yellow. A narrow, black line runs median on the mesonotum and becomes somewhat wider at the scutellum and metanotum . The abdomen is yellow with a distinct dark, dorsal median line. On the back of the head behind the ocelles there is a black, rhomboid-shaped spot.

distribution

The red-brown dance fly can be found in Europe - with the exception of the Iberian Peninsula . Occasionally, it stays in grassy locations of mesophilic forests or near hedges from May to July .

biology

The red-brown dance fly eats insects or drinks nectar e.g. B. of umbellifers or garlic mustard ( Alliaria petiolata ) and dandelion ( Taraxacum ).

Taxonomy

The species was first described by Carl von Linné in his work Fauna Svecica in 1761 .
