The Red School (official name in the state monument list school and water pump ) is a listed, neo-Gothic building in Strasburg (Uckermark) , a town in the district of Vorpommern-Greifswald in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

location

The building road runs through the city in the north of the historic city center in a west-east direction. On the western edge of the former city fortifications, the school is north of Baustraße on a plot of land that is not fenced in .

history

According to an information board, the building was created by the local builder Georg Döring. The roof construction was made by Hermann Rebschläger from Strasburg. The opening took place on September 29, 1895 and at that time it accommodated 569 pupils and 541 pupils attending the 16th grade of elementary school. The first rector was Paul Stiens. Before that, the lessons took place in the rectory built in 1760 , which later became the Suhr orphanage.

After the Second World War , the elementary school was converted into a Central School II and served as a primary school from 1953. In 1979 she was given the name Käthe Kollwitz . In 1983 there was a merger with the EOS in Schönhauser Straße to form the Polytechnic High School I. A year later it was renamed in memory of the functionary of the Communist Youth Association of Germany (KJVD) and fighter in the Spanish civil war, Artur Becker . Since the turn of it serves since 1991 as an elementary school.

Building description

The three-story building was essentially made of reddish bricks . Slightly off-center to the east is a tower-like porch with a large, ogival portal. A six-axis wing with classrooms adjoins it to the west. To the east is a three-axis wing with further classrooms and common rooms. The basement is optically separated from the rest of the building with a frieze . Between the second and third floors in the eastern wing there is a transverse rectangular panel with three pointed arched panels above it. There are pressed-segment arched windows with an overlying ox-eye . There is a brick cross in the gable. In the middle of the tower-like central building is a clock tower.
