List of apple varieties

The red ice apple is a very old variety of the cultivated apple . It was cultivated around Bamberg and Nuremberg as early as the 16th century. This apple was widespread in Europe until the 1950s because it has an excellent shelf life: The apples can be stored in burrows for the year after next. This characteristic made it interesting in the past for self-sufficient and small-scale farmers, who in this way could benefit from a rich fruit harvest for a long time. Even today, this robust and resilient apple variety is therefore of interest to hobby gardeners who have a cellar that is not too air-dry. The apple will keep there until July without wilting.

The sweet and sour apples, which ripen at the end of October and are edible from December after 4-6 weeks of ripening, belong to the so-called economic apples, which means that they are mainly used for cooking, baking, canning and juicing. They are also one of the typical "Krampus apples" that are given away for St. Nicholas (December 6th and 7th).

The overcolour of the apple is a washed out dark blood red. A characteristic distinguishing feature are the numerous, partly white-yellow, partly yellow-brown light points. Like tiny little stars, they are clearly visible on the dull red. When fully ripe, the ice apple is much more red in color than can be seen in the picture.

The tree is strong and has a broad, spherical crown. The long-lasting bloom is insensitive to the weather. The tree also thrives in less fertile, but damp and heavy soils and can also be grown in rougher areas. Due to its health and vigor, the red ice apple is very suitable for orchards .
