Prototype: The bison figure in the coat of arms of Breszkaja Woblasz

The red bison ( Belarusian Чырвоны Зубр , Tschyrwony Subr ) is a monumental steel sculpture painted in dark red in Belarus . It is on the M 1 motorway , a section of Europastrasse 30 . The sculpture represents a bison , a national symbol of Belarus; this species once lived in large herds in the landscapes of Eastern Europe .

The sculpture is located on the eastern border of the Breszkaja Woblasz and stands as a landmark on a small hill in the fields of the municipality of Ischkald . The location is about 100 kilometers west of the capital Minsk , and it is about 240 kilometers in the opposite direction to the Polish-Belarusian border crossing at Brest .

The figure of the red bison is a regional landmark and is used for tourism marketing . It was derived from the traditional heraldic animal wisent of the Breszkaja Woblasz. Several sports clubs in the region also use the bison as an advertising figure.

The figure has a height of about 22 meters and a length of about 25 meters. The structure was created using the volume section construction method developed in shipbuilding . In its appearance and long-distance effect, the red bison is reminiscent of the monumental sculpture Toro de Osborne in Spain, which has already been produced in over 80 copies .
