The red spur grouse ( Galloperdix spadicea ) is a member of the pheasant-like family about 36 centimeters tall .
Appearance
These animals have a scale-like plumage. The males are colored red, the females are brownish and have black spots. The legs are red, the tail end is black. The beak is red and yellow at the tip. The bare area around the eyes is red.
distribution and habitat
The red spur hen is only found in India . There they inhabit hilly landscapes, but they also occur on agricultural land.
Way of life
This species lives together in small groups. They look for their food such as roots, tubers and termites, slugs and snails on the ground, which they scratch free with their feet.
Reproduction
The hatchery takes place from January to June. The female lays 3–5 yellowish white eggs in a hollowed out hollow on the ground. The female takes on the breeding business alone. The young flee the nest and leave the nest a few hours after hatching. The male supports the female in rearing the young.
Hazards and protective measures
Since this species is still relatively common and no threats are known, it is classified by the IUCN as ( Least Concern ) not endangered.
Subspecies
So far, three subspecies are known:
- Galloperdix spadicea spadicea ( Gmelin, JF , 1789) occurs in western Nepal , northern and central India .
- Galloperdix spadicea caurina Blanford , 1898 is in the south of Rajasthan ago
- Galloperdix spadicea stewarti Baker, ECS , 1919 is distributed in central and southern Kerala .
