The red-necked click beetle ( Ampedus (Ampedus) sinuatus ) is a beetle from the family of click beetles and the subfamily of Elaterinae .

features

The slender click beetles reach a body length of 7–12 mm. The pronotum is colored black in the front area. In the middle, the black area expands in a wedge shape into the rear area, which is otherwise red-brown in color. The wing covers, head, antennae and legs are black.

distribution

The distribution area of ​​the red-necked click beetle extends from Central Europe over the Balkans and the Carpathian Basin to Asia Minor and the Caucasus . In Germany, the beetle species occurs mainly in the south, especially in the Upper Rhine Plain , and mostly only sporadically.

The beetle species is on the red list in Germany (level 2 - "highly endangered"). The population in Baden-Württemberg is considered "not endangered". However, it is of particular importance for the development of the total population within Germany.

Way of life

The species is mainly found on dry edges and hedges as well as on the edge of deciduous and mixed forests. The beetles fly from mid-April to mid-July. They predatory feed on other small insects. The larvae develop in the dry rot wood of oak and beech , less often of pine , on which they feed.
