Rothamsted Research (formerly Rothamsted Experimental Station ) is the UK's largest agricultural research institute and the oldest in the world. It is situated on the estate of Rothamsted Manor in Harpenden ( Hertfordshire ) and has over 420 employees. Achim Dobermann has been the director of the institute since June 2014 .

history

John Bennet Lawes , then owner of the Rothamsted lands, began a series of experiments with the chemist Joseph Henry Gilbert in 1843 to investigate the effect of organic and inorganic fertilizers on yields . Lawes had opened the first fertilizer factory in 1842. Lawes and Gilbert worked together for 57 years. By around 1900, considerable amounts of data had accumulated from the experiments that required a well-founded statistical analysis. Therefore, the statistics were promoted in Rothamsted, among other things, Ronald Fisher had been working in Rothamsted since 1919.

Rothamsted has made many contributions to agricultural science, including on pyrethroids ( Michael Elliott ), virology (isolation of the tobacco mosaic virus by Frederick Bawden and Norman Pirie et al.), Nematology , soil science, and resistance to pesticides .
