The Rothenburg (also Rotes Schlössel , French Château de Rothenbourg ) is the ruin of a medieval rock castle near the municipality of Philippsbourg in the Moselle department . It has been in ruins since it was destroyed in the 14th century. The castle is located on a sandstone rock at a height of 400 meters on a foothill of the Rothenberg. Only small remains of the walls, chambers and traces of the terrain, such as the cistern and moat , have survived from the castle .

history

The castle was supposedly built in the 10th century by the Bishop of Strasbourg . It was first mentioned in a document, however, in the 12th century, when it was mentioned as a fiefdom of the Strasbourg bishop. At that time it was handed over to Lorraine and Zweibrücken-Bitsch . Since the lord of the castle, Harnach von Weißkirchen, was guilty of robbery, the castle was destroyed in 1309, 1360 or 1369 by Strasbourg troops and never rebuilt.
