The red cap tamarin ( Saguinus mystax pileatus ) is a subspecies of the mustache tamarin ( Saguinus mystax ) from the marmoset family (Callitrichidae).
features
Like all tamarins, red cap tamarins are relatively small primates. Their fur is predominantly black, the top of the head is dark red. There is white hair on the lips, but this "mustache" is smaller than that of the mustache tamarin. As with all marmosets, the fingers and toes (with the exception of the big toe) have claws instead of nails.
distribution and habitat
Red cap tamarins live in the western Amazon basin in South America . Their distribution area is in western Brazil south of the Amazon and west of the Rio Purus in the area of the rivers Rio Tefe and Rio Coarí. Their habitat are tropical rainforests , whereby they often occur in secondary forests and forest edge areas that are dense with undergrowth.
Way of life
Little is known about the way of life of these primates, presumably it largely corresponds to that of the mustache tamarins. As a result, they are diurnal tree dwellers who live together in small groups and feed mainly on fruits and insects.
Danger
There are no known hazards, the IUCN lists the red cap tamarin as "not endangered" ( least concern ).
