Round Island is an uninhabited island in Lake Huron in Mackinac County in the US state of Michigan in the United States . It is located on Mackinac Strait , the waterway that connects Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. Round Island is located in front of the port of Mackinac Island and the approximately 900,000 Mackinac Island tourists who arrive by ferry drive past the island. Round Island borders the inhabited Bois Blanc Island in the southeast . The island's beaches are generally rocky. The Indians of North America call the island "Nissawinagong".

Almost the entire 153 hectares of the island area form the Round Island Wilderness Area , part of the Hiawatha National Forest . Round Island is nominally part of the city of Mackinac Island , but is practically maintained by the United States Forest Service .

The only building on the island is an old lighthouse , the Round Island Light . The shipping channel between Mackinac Island and Round Island, illuminated by the lighthouse, is called the Round Island Channel .

In 1980 movie Somewhere in Time ( Somewhere in Time ) scenes were Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour shot near the lighthouse. The lighthouse is closed to visitors.
