Round Palagruža cannonball

The Palagruža rock at dawn

The Round Palagruža Cannonball ( RPC ) is a one-class sailing regatta that has been held annually in the Adriatic since 2008 .

history

The forerunners of the regatta were the Adriatic Offshore Challenge 2005 and 2006, where the players got to know each other. The Murter Dubrovnik Challenge 2007 was the first self-organized regatta after the organizer Blu Balu went bankrupt. Ronnie Zeiller and Miša Strobl were the two leading people who organized this regatta.

It was also Ronnie Zeiller and Miša Strobl who organized the first RPC in 2008 as the nautical club sail attack.

The route from 2008 to 2019

A circuit of around 380 nautical miles is covered.

Biograd (start) - Ugljan (bb) - Dugi Otok (bb) - Biševo (stb) - Palagruža (bb) - Mljet (bb) - Korčula (stb) - Hvar (stb) - Biograd (destination)

The islands mentioned are markings which are to be rounded on port (bb) and starboard (stb), as stated above.

For the first time in 2020, the route is planned to be reversed clockwise!

Prices

  • Challenge prize “Segelguide-Trophy” for the fastest ship (until 2012)
  • Challenge Prize "Spirit of Palagruza - Trophy" (from 2013) - After winning the Sailing Guide Trophy three times (2010, 2011 and 2012) it became the property of Martin Hartl. Martin Hartl then donated the "Spirit of Palagruza Trophy" to the fastest ship in the Round Palagruza Cannonball. This is a true-to-scale replica of the Palagruza rock made of solid iron and at 78 kg one of the heaviest sports trophies in the world.
  • Challenge award “Rote Laterne” from Christoph Nöhrig for the skipper with the longest time sailed in the race (until 2016)
  • Cups and medals for the first 3 yachts in each unit class

2016

At the ninth edition of the Round Palagruza Cannonball from April 9 to April 16, 2016, the new boat class Elan 350 was added to the competition in addition to the existing boat classes (Bavaria 42 Match and Bavaria 40CS).

Since the boats are not ideal for a cross in strong winds, the failure rate was 60%! As a result, this unit class was no longer used in the RPC.

2018

11. Round Palagruza Cannonball in two unit classes (Bavaria 42match and Bavaria 41s) with a total of 30 boats.

This regatta was characterized by strong SE winds at the beginning with a corresponding wave height. Under spinnaker in the Zadarski Canal towards northwest and a hard cross after the rounding of Dugi Otok towards Vis / Bisevo. The south current held during the entire race, a speed race from Palagruza to Mliet and then again spinnaker to the finish in Biograd. In an extremely exciting three-way duel, RPC organizer Ronnie Zeiller had to admit defeat to RPC co-founder Miša Strobl. Christian Fuczik's team came in third.

2019

12. Round Palagruza Cannonball in a one-size-fits-all class (Bavaria 41s), a total of 20 boats.

With NW winds of 12 to 26 knots in the first two days, the participants sailed at record speed to the southeast tip of Mljet. There, however, as so often, calm. It went slowly up the Mljetski Canal to Korcula, where the field again had to wait until the evening for a fresh wind in a lull. Then it went with a very nice southerly sailing wind under spinnaker to the destination in Biograd. Sailing at the highest level with a very dense field and extremely exciting changes of position marked this 12th RPC.
