Rufiniana (Palatinate)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rufiniana (Greek Ρουφινιάνα , in transliteration Rouphiniana ) is the name of a place on the Upper Rhine that the Greek astronomer, historian and geographer Ptolemy mentions around 150 in his Γεογραφίκη (September 2, 17) as a settlement of the Nemeter in the Roman province of Germania superior . Historians usually locate it in the area between Speyer and Worms and equate it with a Roman customs post.

The most likely location is the Palatinate town of Eisenberg , where many traces, including a Roman road, a commercial vicus and recent excavations, indicate a strong Roman presence and settlement. The production of iron from ores from the Palatinate Forest has also been proven.

However, some scientists locate Rufiniana near Ludwigshafen am Rhein , in the current district of Rheingönheim , while an occasional equation with the Alsatian Rouffach (German Rufach) leads to some contradictions.
