Rover's painted images speak a visual language of the country's history, present and past. His imagery is a part of Aboriginal art in the eastern Kimberley. Rover Thomas combined the painting style of the Western Desert with the style in the eastern Kimberley and showed a synthesis in his works. One of the traditional subjects he dealt with was the dreaming of the barramundi , a fish that was important to the Aborigines.

Rover Thomas has depicted the suffering that European settlers inflicted on the Aborigines in some of his works. In particular the painting of the late Rover Thomas and his wife Queenie McKenzie , also a successful painter, refer to the massacres of Aborigines as part of his series "Killing Times" with the pictures "Bedford Downs" (1985) and "Mistake Creek" (1990) . His wife Queenie painted a picture she named Massacre and Rover Thomas Story - Texas Downs Country .

In 1990 he won the John McCaughey Prize of the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney and in the same year he and Trevor Nickoll represented Australian art at the Venice Biennale . He took part in numerous group exhibitions at home and abroad.
