The United States Geological Survey (USGS) carried out a survey in 1974. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named the massif in 1976 after Peter Dewitt Rowley (* 1943), participant in the USGS expedition from 1970 to 1971 to the Lassiter coast and leader of the expedition from 1972 to 1973 in the same area.
