Roy Williams (athlete)

Roy Alfred Williams (born September 9, 1934 in Dunedin ) is a former New Zealand decathlete .

Life

Williams was born and raised in Dunedin on September 9, 1934 and was associated throughout his life with his older sister, Yvette Williams , who was known in New Zealand and was an Olympic long jump champion in 1952 and won four Empire Games gold medals in her career .

After retiring as an athlete in 1970, he coached young athletes at the Waitakere City Athletic Club in Auckland for over 30 years . The club's athletes won 28 titles in New Zealand and set 17 national records. He also worked for the Auckland Star as a sports journalist for over 25 years .

Qualifications

Although Williams won eleven national decathlon titles between 1956 and 1970, he was never nominated for the Olympics .

Honors

  • In 1966 Williams was named Sportsman of the Year in New Zealand.
  • In 1990 he was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame in New Zealand.
  • In 2002 he was honored with the New Zealand Order of Merit for his services to athletics.
