The Continental GT is a motorcycle from the now Indian motorcycle manufacturer Royal Enfield , which emerged from a British manufacturer of guns , motorcycles and automobiles .
The 1966 model
In order to survive in the highly competitive motorcycle market, Royal Enfield developed new approaches in the 1960s. In the mid-1960s, the young apprentices at Royal Enfield were asked to design a bike according to their own ideas, in order to precisely meet the tastes of the young buyers:
The resulting "Continental GT" with 250 cm³ and strong 20 hp is built in the then new style of a cafe racer in the factory in Hewell Road in Redditch and thrilled the youth. The model also shaped the subculture of rockers in England. The name of the machine is derived from a "marketing measure". The reliability of the machine was effectively demonstrated on the classic so-called "Iron Butt Route" from John o 'Groats in the north of Scotland to Land's End in Cornwall .
The then 925 mile route was covered in less than 24 hours and without any machine failure.
The 2012 model
When it was launched in 2012, the "Continental GT" was the sportiest machine from Royal Enfield and is reminiscent of the café racers of the 60s, including the Enfield model from 1966. However, it is equipped with a 535 cm³ single-cylinder engine with an output of almost 21 kW (30 hp) at 5100 rpm. The “Iron Butt Route” from John o 'Groats to Land's End was also used with this model, and the construction once again proved its reliability.
The Continental engine is a block engine - crankshaft and gearbox are combined in one housing - and has intake manifold injection ; The alternator sits on the crankshaft on the right, the primary drive on the left. The emission limits EURO 3 and 4 can be complied with. It has a 90 mm stroke and 84 mm bore and achieves a maximum torque of 44.0 Nm at a speed of 4000 rpm.
