The Royal Exchange is a commercial building in the Scottish city ​​of Dundee in the council area of the same name . In 1965 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

The Royal Exchange was completed in 1855. Scottish architect David Bryce is responsible for the design . Additions were planned by John Murray Robertson in 1882 and by James Findlay in 1910 . In 1954, as part of the redesign of the interior by T. Lindsay Gray, the hammer-beam vault of the reading room was subdivided and lowered.

The mostly two-story building is located at the intersection of the road Meadowside with Panmure Street in the city center. Opposite are the McManus Galleries and to the west is the High School of Dundee . The neo-Gothic building is designed in the style of the Flemish Gothic . Its masonry consists of yellowish sandstone blocks that were built into layered masonry . The rear quarry stone masonry is faced with stone blocks.

The south-facing main facade along Panmure Street is seven axes wide. The seven elaborately designed, small gables with pointed arched windows are striking . A square tower rises from the edge of the building. It ends with an open stone parapet with sculptured gargoyles . A small, semi-octagonal tower protrudes from the short facade along the Meadowside . The roof of the Royal Exchange is covered with gray slate.
