Ruangwa is a district in the Tanzanian region of Lindi with the administrative center in the city of Ruangwa . The district is bordered by the Kilwa District to the north, the Lindi District to the east, the Mtwara Region to the south and the Nachingwea District to the west .

Ruangwa is 2516 square kilometers and has 131,080 inhabitants (as of 2012). The region is bounded in the north by the Mbwemburu River , to the south the land rises to the Rondo Mountains up to 800 meters above sea level. A northeast wind blows from June to October and a southeast wind from November to May. This southeast wind brings humid air, which means that the rainy season lasts from mid-November to May. It rains 800 to 1200 millimeters a year, more in the east and in the mountains than in the west. The climate is tropical, Aw according to the effective climate classification .

population

In 2002 the district had 124,009 inhabitants. This corresponds to an annual growth rate of 0.6 percent until 2012, the lowest rate in the region. In 2012, ten percent lived in urban areas and ninety percent in rural areas. Of those over five years of age, 58 percent could read and write Swahili and five percent English, 37 percent were illiterate (as of 2012).

Facilities and services

  • Education: In the district there are elementary schools in 83 of the 90 villages and a secondary school in 15 (as of 2018).
  • Health: A hospital, four health centers and 34 pharmacies are available to provide medical care for the population. Almost half of the diseases treated are malaria cases (as of 2016).
  • Water: 45 percent of the population has access to safe and clean water, a third has the water source within 400 meters.

Economy and Infrastructure

The majority of the population works in agriculture, three percent in the household and five percent are self-employed or employed in other branches of the economy.

  • Agriculture: Mainly corn, cassava , millet, rice, peas and cowpeas are grown for personal use, cashew nuts, sesame , onions, tomatoes and peanuts are intended for sale (as of 2016). More than ninety percent of rural households own farm animals. Mainly chickens and cattle are kept (as of 2012).
  • Natural resources: 500 million tons of graphite coal are stored in Ruangwa. Color- changing garnets are found in Nandagala .
  • Roads: The district has 200 kilometers of regional roads, 300 kilometers of district roads and 180 kilometers of village roads. Almost all of the regional roads are passable even in the rainy season, around eighty percent of the district roads.
