Reuven "Ruby" Goldstein  (born October 10, 1907 in Manhattan , New York City , † April 22, 1984 in Miami Beach ) was an American professional boxer  and  referee .

Career

Ruby Goldstein fought as a professional in the light and welterweight classes from 1925 to 1937 and worked as a referee from 1943 to 1964. In his career as a professional boxer he won his first 23 fights and ended his active career with a record of 50 wins from 55 fights, 34 of which by knockout

As a referee, Goldstein was repeatedly criticized for breaking off fights too early. So he ended 1957 the fight between the British Randy Turpin against Sugar Ray Robinson in the tenth round in favor of Robinson. In June 1959 he decided in the fight of the heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson in favor of the Swede Ingemar Johansson , after Patterson had gone down for the seventh time.

In March 1962, however, Goldstein came under fire for having broken off Benny Paret's fight against Emile Griffith too late after Benny Paret died of injuries sustained in the fight. His fans and other observers defended him and say that he stopped the fight so late because Paret often simulated being in a weak state only to surprise his opponents. The State Athletic Commission acquitted Goldstein of the allegations.
