Ruby Payne-Scott

Ruby Violet Payne-Scott (born May 28, 1912 in Grafton (New South Wales) , † May 25, 1981 in Mortdale ) was an Australian radio astronomer .

Payne-Scott studied at the University of Sydney and then worked for the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization . During World War II , she worked on secret radar projects. As a communist and women's rights activist , she was watched by the Australian Security Intelligence Organization .

Ruby Payne-Scott married William Holman Hall in 1944. Since at this time married women were not allowed to be permanently employed in the public service, she initially kept her marriage a secret. The couple had two children, the future mathematician Peter Gavin Hall and the future artist Fiona Margaret Hall .
