Rudi Tonn

Rudi Tonn (born December 25, 1923 in Stolp , Pomerania ; † December 20, 2004 in Frechen ) was honorary mayor of Hürth, a town in the Rhein-Erft district bordering Cologne to the south , from 1979 to 1999 .

Life

Rudi Tonn was born the son of a lathe operator on December 25, 1923 in Pomerania . Before the Second World War , he trained as an industrial clerk at the (aircraft) engine plant in Berlin-Marienfelde . 1942 was drafted to the paratroopers . He became an American prisoner of war, from which he was released in 1946. After stints in Duisburg and Baden-Baden , he moved to Cologne in 1962 with his wife Christel, née Leisten (* July 19, 1926, † August 6, 2013), whom he married in 1946, and then soon moved to Hürth, where he stayed until his death. Here he was employed at the RWE Goldenberg power plant in Hürth-Knapsack until his retirement . The Tonn couple have a son. Rudi Tonn died on December 20, 2004 in the Frechen hospital.

Political activity

His political interest did not start until 1956 when he joined the SPD . He had already joined the union in 1951 . In 1969 he was elected to the Hürth City Council and there - as a footballer and fan of 1. FC Köln - as chairman of the sports committee (until 1979).

In 1975 he became deputy mayor, and in 1979 first honorary mayor. He stayed that way for 20 years. Until autumn 2004 he sat (since 1979) for the SPD in the district assembly of the Rhein-Erft district.

Tonn was a member of 22 clubs and an honorary member of 12 others. He was particularly committed to the workers' welfare , which he joined in 1970. Since 1986 he has been a board member of the AWO district Middle Rhine and the AWO Rhein-Erft district. In the Hürther AWO, he coordinated the local association, which named an old people's center after him during his lifetime (1996).

Honors

In 1986 he received the Federal Cross of Merit , in 1991 the ring of honor of the city of Hürth and in 2000 the honorary citizenship of his chosen hometown of Hürth. On June 20, 2006, the city of Hürth honored him by naming a street (Rudi-Tonn-Platz) after him in a central new building area south of the town hall. The Hürth AWO Altenzentrum was named "Rudi Tonn Altenzentrum" in honor of Rudi Tonn.
