Willi Laschet (born November 22, 1920 in Trier ; † July 30, 2010 in Hürth ) was a German painter , graphic artist , poster painter and visual artist who last lived and worked in Hürth. Laschet was one of the last painter of large, sometimes more than 25 square meters large cinema posters that used on the facades of cinemas pointed to the respective currently running film.

Life

Laschet attended the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium in Trier because his father had intended him for a priestly career. But Laschet preferred art. So he studied art with painting and graphics at the Trier Master School of German Crafts until he was drafted into military service and then military service in 1941. He was captured by the Americans with Rommel's army and shipped to the United States . It was not until 1947, after returning from captivity, that he found his first commissions, initially as a portrait painter , but then soon in his future profession as a cinema poster painter for the “Scala Theater” in Bitburg . There he also created advertising posters for the world-famous Bitburger Pils . It was only when he moved to Cologne and took over an established poster painting studio with customers all over the Rhineland that he made a secure living.

In 1967 the family then moved to Hürth. The decline of the big movie theaters and the lack of concern for daily income gave Laschet more space and time for free painting here in his studio. He also lectured at the adult education center until he was 86 and also kept in contact with many schools in order to get people excited about painting.

He died at the age of almost 90 on July 30, 2010 in Hürth.

Election campaign in Hürth: Rudi Tonn

Laschet's posters are characterized both by their particular realism in the portrayal of people and their expressiveness, for example in posters for the great white shark , Jurassic Park or in his posters for the SPD during the election campaign in the 1980s in his home town of Hürth.

In the last years of his career he also worked on objects and sculptures . A metal sculpture designed by him was set up on a Wesselingen traffic roundabout at the end of October 2006, sponsored by the nearby refinery .

Laschet exhibited his pictures and objects but also preserved large posters in many places throughout the Rhineland, including Luxembourg , Trier and Wiesbaden . Some of his posters are archived at the Deutsches Filminstitut in Frankfurt am Main .

Appreciations

In awards for his life's work, he received the culture award of his hometown Hürth (1995), the culture award of the Rhein-Erft district (1996) and the Rhineland thaler of the Rhineland Regional Council .

The Landschaftsverband Rheinland produced a film documentary about its laureates and his work, which was premiered on April 26, 2006 in the Hürth community center in his presence and presented to many interested friends, art lovers, collectors and cinema lovers.
