Rudolf August Demme

Rudolf August Demme (born June 3, 1894 in Mühlhausen / Thuringia , † January 5, 1975 in Merl (Meckenheim) ) was a German officer , most recently major general in World War II .

Life

Demme fought as an officer in World War I and retired from army service in 1919. In 1934 he joined the Wehrmacht and served as a training officer in the Condor Legion in the Spanish Civil War in 1936/1937 . In the first two years of the Second World War , he led various engineer and tank engineer battalions before he took over the 59th Panzer Grenadier Regiment in June 1942. As a commander, he led the 17th Panzer Division and the 132nd Infantry Division . At the end of the war, Demme was taken prisoner by the Soviets. On October 6, 1955, he was released from prisoner-of-war camp 5110/48 Woikowo .
