Rudolf Engler

Rudolf Engler (born October 25, 1930 in Teufen AR ; † September 5, 2003 ) was a Swiss Romance studies and linguist.

life and work

Engler graduated from St. Gallen in 1949 . He studied Italian and French at the University of Bern from 1949 to 1958 and received his doctorate from Siegfried Heinimann in 1963 with the thesis Théorie et critique d'un principe saussurien. L ' arbitraire du signe (in: Cahiers Ferdinand de Saussure 19, 1962, pp. 5-66). As assistant to Heinimann, he completed his habilitation in 1971 with the text Studies on Lionardo Salviatis Avvertimenti della lingua sopra'l Decamerone 1584/86 and was associate professor from 1973 to 1982, and from 1982 to 1995 full professor for Romance philology at the University of Bern (from 1987 to 1988 also Dean). In the successor to Robert Godel , Engler put the study of the history of structural linguistics on a new basis with his critical edition of the Cours von Saussure .
