Rudolf Hoffmann (Metallurgist)

Rudolf Hoffmann (born July 21, 1873 in Ingurtosu , Sardinia ; † September 7, 1932 in Clausthal-Zellerfeld ) was a German metalworker and university professor.

Life

Rudolf Hoffmann, born as the son of the mining engineer and later operations director of the ore mine Himmelfahrt Fundgrube Robert Hoffmann, studied metallurgy at the Freiberg Bergakademie after attending the Albertinum grammar school in Freiberg . In 1895, like his father, he became a member of the Corps Franconia Freiberg . He completed his studies in 1898 as a graduate metallurgical engineer.

In the same year Hoffmann began his practical career as a business chemist at the Mulden smelting works . In 1903 he became deputy smelter there. After he had passed the second state examination for the higher civil service in the mining and smelter administration, he was appointed Saxon smelter assessor.

In 1906 Hoffmann was appointed professor for general metallurgy and metallurgy at the Bergakademie Clausthal . The main focus of his teaching was metallurgy, electrometallurgy , metallurgical trial science and chemical technology . He went on research trips to Belgium, Austria, Mexico, Canada and the USA. He wrote articles for Kögler's paperback for miners and smelters and Ullmann's encyclopedia of technical chemistry .

Although unfit for field service, Hoffmann volunteered and took part in the First World War as a front soldier . Awarded the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd class, he joined the Stahlhelm, Bund der Frontsoldaten , of which he was leader in the Upper Harz Mountains.
