Rudolf Lange (born July 12, 1850 in Berlin ; † August 24, 1933 there ) was a German linguist and Japanologist .

Life

After graduating from high school, Rudolf Lange from Berlin completed his studies in classical philology and German . As a result, he was briefly employed as a high school teacher at the Gymnasium zum Grauen Kloster in Berlin, before in 1874 he received an offer for a teaching position for German, Latin and geography at the Medical School in Tokyo , which was later incorporated into the Imperial University of Tokyo as the Medical Faculty , which he filled out until 1881. During this time he was also involved in the German Society for Natural History and Ethnology of East Asia , founded in 1873 , in whose communications he published a number of works. He was particularly fond of Japanese proverbs and proverbial sayings.

In 1887, after founding the Seminar for Oriental Languages (SOS), he moved to the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin. There he was the first and only professor of Japanese - Karl Florenz was the first professor of Japanese studies in the German-speaking area in 1914 at the University of Hamburg - with the linguistic and cultural training of diplomats, businesspeople, interpreters and scientists. In 1920, Lange retired from professional life for health reasons - he was handicapped by increasing eye weakness and a nervous problem.

Rudolf Lange, one of the founders of German Japanology, wrote basic textbooks on the Japanese language and writing.
