Hellcats is an American television series about cheerleaders , which was produced by CBS Television Studios , Warner Bros. Television in association with Tom Welling Productions from 2010 to 2011 and broadcast by the US broadcaster The CW .

On May 17, 2011, the series was discontinued by The CW.

action

The focus of the action is Marti Perkins, who aims to study law at Lancer University. However, she is losing her scholarship and is looking for the fastest possible opportunity to get another scholarship so that she can continue her studies. After a long and unsuccessful search, she decides to join the cheerleading team Hellcats in order to receive a scholarship, although her mother Wanda and the ambitious cheerleader Alice Verdura cause problems. Alice sees them as a very big competition, as Marti has a lot of talent due to her dancer and athlete past and Alice cannot take part in the qualifications for a cheerleading competition due to her injury. However, she is supported by the captain of the team, Savannah Monroe, and her best friend Dan Patch, who, however, is rather critical of cheerleading. That changes, however, when Dan starts a relationship with the devout and conservative Savannah and eventually helps the Hellcats with their application video.

characters

Marti Perkins

Marti Perkins (born in Memphis) is an aspiring law student at Lancer University. The overprotective behavior of her mother Wanda Perkins means that she finds out far too late that her scholarship has been canceled, which means that it is currently not funded. By chance she learns from Savannah Monroe about a cheerleader casting for the legendary "Hellcats". A place in this means a scholarship and so Marti begins her training. With her best friend Dan Patch, she initially encountered incomprehension and Marti also initially ensured divided opinions in the cheerleading team.

Savannah Monroe

Savannah is the new captain of the Hellcats and goes on in this role. She sees Marti as tough competition, but still befriends her. She and Marti share a room in the 'Cheertown'. She develops feelings for Marti's childhood friend Dan and eventually gets together with him. Savannah was also raised a strict Catholic by her parents Lane and Parker. She stands by her religion despite the move to "Lancer University" Savannah's sister Charlette (19) lives at home with her parents and became pregnant by Savannah's ex-boyfriend Noah. Savannah and Dan fell apart for a short time, but made up pretty quickly.

Alice Verdura

Alice was a Hellcats flyer before she had a training accident. She was once in a relationship with Lewis. Before Savannah moved to Lancer University, her chances of becoming captain of the Hellcats were good.

Dan Patch

Dan and Marti have been friends since they were kids. The filmmaker has been in love with Marti for years, but later he dates Savannah and starts a relationship with her.

Lewis Flynn

Lewis is Alice's ex-boyfriend. He takes a liking to Marti.

Vanessa Lodge

Vanessa is the coach of the Hellcats and used to be a star of the Hellcats, for her only winning counts. She is with the doctor Derrick Altman.

production

The series is based on the book Cheer: Inside the Secret World of College Cheerleaders by journalist Kate Torgovnick and is described as " Election meets Girls United ". Actor Tom Welling and screenwriter Kevin Murphy are serving as executive producers . The two first named the series Cheer . The script for the pilot was written by Murphy and directed by Allan Arkush . On May 18, 2010, The Hollywood Reporter , Variety and Entertainment Weekly reported that The CW had ordered Hellcats as a series. The main character's name was originally called Sierra Sloane, but later changed to Savannah Monroe.

At the annual Upfronts on May 21, 2010, The CW officially announced that Hellcats had been ordered as a series and that it would run to America's Next Top Model on Wednesdays . The broadcaster ordered the 13 episodes customary in the industry. Numerous promotional clips from Hellcats have been shown on the Internet and on The CW. TV Guide reports that Ashley Tisdale is the show's highest-paid actress at $ 30,000 for each episode.

On the Television Critics Association press tour in Los Angeles on July 29, 2010, producer Murphy said the series was inspired by old sports films like Four Crazy Guys , Crazy for You, and Flashdance . The producer Welling said that he is convinced of the script for the series and that there is no such series on TV yet. When asked why The CW ordered the series, he replied, "Hellcats is one of the underdogs series," and it's one of the big productions.

On September 4, 2010, The CW wanted to break a world record for the "Greatest Cheerleading Dance" in a 5-minute choreography, but failed because of the number of cheerleaders involved.

The pilot was filmed in Vancouver April 13-21, 2010 . The other episodes of the first season have also been filmed in Vancouver since July 24, 2010. The cast had two weeks to learn the choreography for the pilot episode, and only one week for all subsequent episodes.

Former fame actress Debbie Allen will direct a later episode. Due to good and solid ratings, The CW ordered six more scripts for the first season on September 23, 2010. On October 22nd, Variety reported that The CW had ordered a full season of 22 episodes of Hellcats .

music

The leading actresses Michalka and Tisdale plan to continue their music careers separately alongside the series, although both sing in the fourth episode. The series' theme song is sung by Michalka's band 78violet and was shown for the first time in the third episode. Kevin Murphy announced in an interview that there will be a soundtrack for the series, including the song "Rockstar" by Fefe Dobson and the title track. The following songs are covered for the series: " The Letter " by The Box Tops and "Brand New Day" by Sting .

Casting

Ashley Tisdale plays Savannah Monroe

On March 8, 2010, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Alyson Michalka and Gail O'Grady had been confirmed as the first two cast members. Michalka will star college student Marti Perkins, and O'Grady will play her mother, Wanda Perkins, on the show. The site later reported that Ashley Tisdale would take on the role of Savannah Monroe (then Sierra Sloane), the ambitious captain of the Hellcats. Sofia Vassilieva was the next actress to join the cast, but was later replaced by Elena Esovolova, who will play Patty “The Wedge” Wedgerman.

Matt Barr will take on the role of Dan Patch, Marti's old friend . On April 5, 2010, The Hollywood Reporter and Variety reported that Robbie Jones and Heather Hemmens had joined the cast. Jones will play the male lead who falls in love with Marti, while Hemmens will play the sick cheerleader. On April 8th, The Hollywood Reporter reported that actress Sharon Leal will play the role of Vanessa Hodge, a former Hellcats star who is now serving as coach.

On April 14, 2010 it was announced that Ben Browder would take on the role of Red Raymond, Lancer University's football coach, but it was announced on May 21, 2010 that the role would be re-cast. Raymond's role was later re-cast to Jeff Hephner . On July 13, 2010, one day before shooting started, DB Woodside was cast as Derrick Altman.

The producer announced that Gale Harold will be playing a few guest appearances as one of Marti's law professors. Michalka added that Harold will have guest appearances in the third episode and several other episodes.
