Rudolf Matz (born September 19, 1901 in Zagreb (then Austria-Hungary ), † March 22, 1988 also in Zagreb) was a Yugoslav cellist, composer, conductor, teacher and athlete.

Life

Rudolf Matz studied cello with Umberto Fabbri, Juro Tkalčić and the violin teacher Vaclav Huml. In 1926 he graduated from the Zagreb Music Academy in the composition class of Blagoje Bersa . Interrupted by teaching activities at schools in Zagreb (1925–1930, 1941–1945), he ran his private music studio, which in the 1930s developed into an important music school in Zagreb. At the same time he founded and directed various choirs and orchestras and was a cellist in chamber music ensembles. He was secretary (1924–1938), president and artistic director (1938–1941) and conductor (1924–1941) of the " Hrvatski pjevački savez " (Croatian Association of Choral Societies ). In 1931 Matz founded the musicians' association Sklad (Harmonie; its president until 1941). After the Second World War, Matz taught at the Pavao Markovac music school in Zagreb from 1945 to 1951, was professor for cello and chamber music at the Ljubljana Music Academy from 1947 to 1951 , and finally from 1950 to 1972 at the Zagreb University of Music. At the initiative of the American-Croatian Singing Federation, Matz lived in Gary (Indiana) from 1955 to 1957 . He was a jury member at international cello competitions, wrote music reviews and was editor. the " Zss. Hrvatska narodna pjesma ... " Matz was also a member of the "Zagrebacki Trio" and the SKLAD string quartet. He conducted the Zagreb Chamber Orchestra, the Intellectual Music Society, the Croatian Singers' Association and the Zagreb Medical Choir.

His wife Margita Matz was a pianist, harpsichordist and piano teacher.

His compositional work contains around 600 scores and other works. Of these, around 100 are compositions for solo cello and various cello ensembles. He is known for his 32-volume textbook The First Years with the Violoncello .
