Rudyard Spencer

Rudyard Conrad Spencer (born February 3, 1944 in Grange Hill , Westmoreland ) is a Jamaican politician of the Jamaica Labor Party (JLP). He was Jamaica's Minister of Health from September 2007 to January 2012 .

Life

Spencer attended Medgars College and studied Industrial Relations at Cornell University in the United States.

Spencer is President of the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU). He previously held various other positions in the union, including Vice President, Senior Negotiating Officer and BITU specialist in representing the interests of employees in the financial sector. He was also director of the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions . As a member of the Caribbean Congress of Labor , Spencer has also been active in the international trade union movement. He is the past chairman of the BITU / JLP Joint Committee.

In the Jamaica Labor Party, Spencer was temporarily deputy chairman and held other high party offices.

Spencer was named a Senator in 1993 and was the Senate opposition leader from 1995 to 1997. In the 2002 general election, he was elected to the House of Representatives as a candidate for the Jamaica Labor Party for the constituency of South East Clarendon . In the election on September 3, 2007, he won his constituency by a greater margin than before and was able to defend his seat in parliament. The JLP won the majority in this election and formed the new government. Spencer was named Minister of Health by Prime Minister Bruce Golding and sworn in on September 14th. He resigned from the ministerial office on January 6, 2012, after the JLP was defeated by the PNP in the December 29, 2011 election.

In 1995 he was awarded the Order of Distinction .
