The street was named in 1885 in honor of the French legal scholar Faustin Hélie (1799-1884), who lived in the neighboring street, Rue Marceline-Desbordes-Valmore .

The former street of the municipality of Passy was called "Rue Sainte-Claire" before it was incorporated into Paris in 1863. It got its current name on November 10, 1885.
