The street, which was officially opened in 1927, is named after the architect Robert Mallet-Stevens (1886–1945), who constructed it in the years 1925–1927 and from then on resided under number 12 himself. The atelier of the sculptors Jan and Joël Martel (1896–1966) was located at the neighboring number 10 .
Many buildings on the street were added to the list of cultural monuments of the 16th arrondissement in 2000 .
