Rugby Australia , known as the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) until 2017 , is the national sports association for rugby union in Australia . It was founded in 1949 and is a member of World Rugby (WR). She is responsible for the national game operations and the " Wallabies ", the Australian national team.

The Southern Rugby Union was founded in 1874 and the English Rugby Football Union took over its administration . In 1881, the management of gaming operations was transferred to the New South Wales region . Until 1947 she was the representative of Australia in the IRB and organized the tours of the national team. After the Second World War , it was decided to found a superordinate national association.

The first official meeting of representatives of the association took place on November 25, 1949. The regions of New South Wales, Queensland , South Australia , Western Australia , Tasmania and Victoria sent eleven delegates to this meeting. In the 1970s, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory were added. In 1997, the association was renamed the Australian Rugby Union.
