Rugby Union in Namibia

Alongside soccer , roller hockey and fistball, rugby union isthe most popular sport in Namibia . It has been one of the three national sports in the country since 2018.

Rugby has been played in Namibia since 1916 and was introduced by South African migrants . As in South Africa, rugby is mainly practiced by Afrikaans speaking Namibians, but also by white English speakers and German Namibians . The sport is particularly popular with school children. The Namibian Rugby Federation has 28 clubs with 9317 registered players.

Association

The umbrella organization was founded in March 1990 and is a member of the International Rugby Board .

The women play under the umbrella of the Namibia Women's Rugby Association .

National team

Men's

The Namibian national team in rugby union is considered to be the second best in Africa after the selection of South Africa . Namibia has already qualified five times for the Rugby Union World Cup, in 1999, 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2015. The team was eliminated as the bottom group in the preliminary round.

Ladies

The women's national rugby team of Namibia played their first international match on October 19, 2013. This was won 31 to 10 against the selection of Botswana.
