Lake Rugwero is located at the southern end of the Mugesera-Rugwero swamps in southeast Rwanda. About 20 km² of the area of the lake is in Rwanda and 80 km² in Burundi. The lake extends over a length of about 18 kilometers in north-south direction and about 14.5 kilometers in east-west direction. At its southern end the Muhembuzi and at the eastern end the Nyamabuno flow into the lake. Lake Rugwero is also connected to Lake Kanzigiri via Nyamabuno .
