RuhrFutur is an education initiative supported by the Mercator Foundation , the State of North Rhine-Westphalia , six cities and a district, seven universities and the Ruhr Regional Association (RVR). With the “Collective Impact” approach, it pursues the goal of contributing to a more efficient education system in the Ruhr Metropolis.

RuhrFutur is a joint educational initiative of the Mercator Foundation, the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the cities of Bochum , Dortmund , Essen , Gelsenkirchen , Herten , Mülheim an der Ruhr and the Recklinghausen district as well as the Ruhr University Bochum , the Bochum University of Applied Sciences , the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences , the Technical University of Dortmund , the University of Duisburg-Essen , the Ruhr West University , the Aachen University and the Regional Association Ruhr (RVR). The patron of the education initiative is the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia Armin Laschet .

The work of RuhrFutur is based on the approach of collective impact. The concept developed in the USA aims to bring actors from different areas together through networking, to motivate them to formulate binding common goals and thus to multiply the effect of their actions. The educational initiative has the task of improving the framework conditions for education and its quality. The fields for the implemented projects are “Early Childhood Education”, “School”, “University”, “Data and Analysis” and “Language Education”. Individual projects are scientifically supported. The sponsor of the education initiative is RuhrFutur gGmbH, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Stiftung Mercator GmbH. It is financed from foundation funds and grants.
