The Ruhrstadion is the third largest sports facility in Mülheim an der Ruhr . The football stadium is located in the Styrum district , directly between the A 40 and the train tracks in the direction of Duisburg . The stadium was built in 1925 with an athletics facility and a grass field.

In the 1970s, 1. FC Mülheim played in the 2nd Bundesliga . At that time, the sports facility was equipped with a covered grandstand with 2,000 seats. The capacity at that time was 20,000 places.

At the end of the 20th century, the facility threatened to deteriorate and was renovated. The standing bars in the curves have been removed and a few standing trusses have only been built on the back straight. The stadium, which had a capacity of 6,000 at that time, was the venue for the home games of the now dissolved national division Galatasaray Mülheim until 2008.

Since the 2010/11 season, Mülheim's most successful football club, VfB Speldorf , has been using the stadium, which now only has a capacity of 2,500. After a renovation in 2012, the Ruhrstadion has a capacity of 6,000 seats. In addition to a fire protection renovation and refurnishing with bright red seats, the floodlight system , the sound system and the speaker booth were renewed.
