Rui Abreu

Rui Pinto de Abreu (born June 23, 1961 in Lourenço Marques , Mozambique, † 1982 in Cleveland , United States) was a Portuguese swimmer.

life and career

Abreu was born in the Portuguese colony of Mozambique and began swimming there. After the country gained independence, he came to Coimbra in 1975, where he joined the Académica de Coimbra association . In 1981 he moved to the United States to pursue his studies and swimming training.

In 1976 in Montreal as a relay swimmer and in 1980 in Moscow as an individual swimmer, he took part in the Olympic Games. He was the national record holder for 100 meters freestyle, 100 meters and 200 meters back, 200 meter medley and with the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay and the 4 × 100 meter relay.

In 1982, at the age of 21, he committed suicide. In Coimbra, the Complexo de Piscinas , which opened in 2004, bears his name.
