The Rosenburg is the ruin of a hilltop castle on a wooded hill west of Herisau in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden in Switzerland . It is located on the Ramsenstock ( 926 m above sea level ), one kilometer south of Ramsen, and is therefore also called Ramsenburg .
history
It was built in the 12th century (around 1150). It is first mentioned in 1270 with Egilolve von Rosenburg . It was the seat of the Knights of Rorschach , was sold to the Prince Abbey of St. Gallen in 1396 and destroyed in the Appenzell War in 1403. In the years 1936/37 the remains of the building were excavated and preserved.

The complex consists of a residential tower , residential buildings and the surrounding wall and is surrounded by a deep moat . The keep (residential tower) with high entrance has a floor area of 9.2 × 9.7 meters and a wall thickness of 2.2 to 2.9 meters.
