Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru ( Japanese. 風 が 強 く 吹 い て い る ) is a novel by Shion Miura from 2006. The book is about a student club that wants to take part in the Hakode Ekiden . It was adapted as a manga and anime , among other things . The anime series was also released internationally under the title Run with the Wind .

action

The student Kakeru Kurahara has too little money to live on and is therefore happy when his fellow student Haiji Kiyose offers him a cheap room in a dormitory. After Kurahara has been introduced to the other roommates, everyone celebrates the new neighbor in the evening. Haiji takes the opportunity to let them all know that they are now enough people to take part in the Hakone Ekiden - which everyone else is protesting against. But the dormitory belongs to the university's athletics club and all residents have ignorantly committed to the club with the rental agreement. Haiji has been planning for a long time to gather enough roommates here to be able to take part in the race. And after a bit of persuasion, many initially agree to take part - some just to avoid sitting on the street. But the sporty Kurahara participates in the training, but refuses to participate in the race. He used to be a runner, but gave up running because he couldn't do justice to the great pressure to succeed.

During the training that Haiji organizes as well as the catering for everyone, it turns out that almost all of them have no experience as runners. The progress is very different and when they take part in the first race only Haiji and Kakeru can qualify. While the others are disappointed with their poor times, Kakeru is disappointed to have only finished third after two other well-known runners. As a result, he has problems improving at all and a dispute ensues - especially with the weakest member of the team. Haiji then succeeds in convincing Kakeru that there is more to running than just being fast and that everyone in the team is now making an effort. When Haiji collapses from exhaustion, the other nine have to divide up his duties to avoid falling behind. Kakeru takes on the role of trainer and notices how everyone else is working on themselves. He begins to pay more attention to you and the way you run and can help you. Haiji will soon be healthy again and three more can qualify in the next race. All together now have the will to take part in the Ekiden, are worried about the success of the team and are putting more and more energy and time into it.

So now everyone tries to train as much as possible. For this, some have to restrict other areas of their everyday life. In summer the club goes to a training camp to train in the mountains under different conditions and even more intensively. They meet a former classmate Kakerus, who still blames him for how Kakeru attacked her trainer under the pressure and so everyone was unable to participate in a race. An argument ensues in which Kakeru has to be held back by his friends. The club speaks out and wants to stick together. After the camp, the team stays even closer together and even the last ones manage to run the time for the qualification race. In this, they all run together and in the end can barely manage the necessary time. During this and during the preparation for the race, doubts grow as to what the team can achieve at Hakone-Ekiden, because the other clubs seem unattainably strong. The answer is not clear to Haiji either, he is still looking for it himself while running. Kakeru, on the other hand, is worried about him because Haiji's knee seems to be causing him problems. He had to give up walking to have an operation.

At Hakone-Ekiden everyone has found their confidence again. While the newcomer club is doing surprisingly well - especially for outsiders - they fall behind at the end of the first half because of a sick runner who only makes it to the goal with the last bit of strength. Kakeru, who sets a new record, and his comrades can catch up again in the second part and Haiji is the last runner to make the team finish 10th and thus automatically qualify for the next year. Because of his knee, Haiji was only able to manage the run thanks to pain medication and has to give up running afterwards. As the club developed well over the next few years, Haiji became a coach.
