Frederiksdal runestone

The rune stone of Fredriksdal ( Sö 33 ) on Tjuvsigen in Fredriksdal in the municipality of Trosa north of Vagnhärad in Södermanland in Sweden is made of light granite . The rune stone was found in 1844 north of the former county road on a stream that then flowed through the town of Skåäng. The stone cannot have been placed at the point where it was found in 1844. It has been relocated to be used as a flagstone bridge in the swamp .

It is 1.7 m high, 1.2 m wide and 0.25 m thick. The rune height is 6–10 cm. The stone is in good condition and the lettering is clear. The inscription is in a serpentine band in a top view and an only partially encircling outer band of writing, which runs around a swastika-like cross designed as a Solomon's knot . The stone back is smoother and decorated with a cross.

The inscription tells of a thing place in the east:

  • gnubha: liþ: raisa: stain: þinsa: hibtiR: kulaif: bruþur sin han: antaþis: austr: at þikum

Old-East Norse transmission:

  • Gnúpa lét reisa stein þenna eptir Gulleif, bróður sinn. Hann endaðist austr at þingum.

Translation:

  • “Gnúpa had this stone built after Gulleifr, his brother. He died on the thing in the east. "

Nearby is the Skåäng rune stone .
