Runestone from Högstena

The runestone of Högstena ( Samnordisk runtextdatabas Sö 105) stands on a hill next to the old country road south of Kjula in Södermanland in Sweden . On the other side of the street there is a building block that threatens to be swallowed by the growing gravel pit.

The Sö 105 stone is a heavily worn slender rune stone , but the name Ingvar on the side of the stone is clearly legible.

description

He is one of the 26 Ingvarstones ( Ingvarsstenar in Swedish ) that report the death in Serkland . Certain details of the ornament suggest that the rune master Aeskil made several of these stones. One can never be sure, however, as the runemasters took inspiration from one another and signatures are rare.

The text reads: “Holmvid (built this stone after) Torbärn (?), (His) son. He drove with Ingvar. ”Several runes can only be seen as shallow depths today. The hardest to spot is the cross on top. The contours are made visible with paint.

Remarks

  1. Ingvar Vittfarne ( German  "Ingvar the far-traveled " , also Ingvar Emundsson) undertook a war trip ( Swedish útrór ) mentioned on 26 rune stones to Serkland on the Caspian Sea , during which he and many of his people died.
  2. In addition to the rune stone in Tillinge kyrka in Uppland (U785) and a rune stone on Gotland , the Ingvar stones are the only ones that mention Serkland , the region on the Caspian Sea.
