Runestone from Replösa
The runestone of Replösa ( Swedish Replösastenen ; also called Sm 35) is a 1.85 meter high and 0.9 meter wide (tapering upwards) and 0.35 m thick runestone made of granite . It stands on Sickingevägen, north of Replösa, northeast of Ljungby in Småland in Sweden .
The runestone
The 13–15 cm high inscription in the spiral-shaped snake band dates from the 10th century and reads:
- "Götrad gjorde denna vård efter Åstrad sin fader, the ypperste av de fränder and tegnar som i Finnveden fordom levde".
- "Götrad erected this monument in memory of Åstrad, his father, the best of all free men and relatives (tegner) who existed in Finnveden before times ."
The Danish-speaking names Götrad and Åstrad are strange. The name Åstrad has also been known from Danish rune stones since the Middle Ages . However, the name Götrad does not appear on any other Swedish rune stone. The Finnveden is a region in the province of Småland. The word "tegner" appears on many rune stones, but its meaning is controversial.
The ship settlement
A little south of the rune stone is a damaged, partially restored ship settlement . It is seventeen meters long and six meters wide and consists of seven preserved stones that are 0.8–1.5 meters high. According to earlier information, it should originally have consisted of twelve stones.
The burial grounds
On the other side of the road is the Ljungby cemetery with 55 burial mounds and 20 building stones . The largest mounds are about 12.0 meters in diameter and 1.5 meters high. Some have pits in the middle or curbs on the outside. Five are oval in shape. The Replösa burial ground is similar to Kånna Högar south of Ljungby. The two grave fields date from the younger Iron Age (400–650 AD)
About 400 meters south of the rune stone there is another burial ground with 20 burial mounds, the largest is 1.7 meters high.
