Runestone from Styrstad

Runestone Ög 153

The runestone of Styrstad ( Ög 153 ) stands on the cemetery wall of the Styrstads kyrka , southeast of Norrköping in Östergötland in Sweden . Immediately next to it is the fragmentarily preserved rune stone Ög 154.

Originally, the two stylistically very different rune stones were built one on top of the other in the cemetery wall. The marginal incision of Ög 153 in an unusually intertwined serpentine band is the only decoration on a stone from the Viking Age by an unknown rune master . The writing tape consists of two narrow snakes that change sides in knots ( Swedish knutrunar ) and form medallions with the inscription inside .

The text reads: hruRikR risþi stain þansa aftiR fruþa auk asbaun suau sina ×

HrøRikR ræisþi stæin þennsa æftiR Froða ok Asbiorn, sunu sina.
Hrœríkr travels stone þenna eptir Fróða ok Ásbjôrn, sonu sína.

"Hrœríkr set up this stone in memory of his sons Fróði and Ásbjôrn."
