biography

After graduating from high school in 1832 at what is now the Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich , Anton Mittermüller first studied at the Lyceum in Landshut and then at the University of Munich . During this time he was an alumnus of the Georgianum . In 1837 he was ordained a priest in Regensburg and initially worked as a secular priest before he entered the Benedictine monastery in Metten in 1840. At profession he was given the religious name Rupert.

In the following years Rupert Mittermüller worked first as a teacher at the grammar school in Metten (1841-1843; 1844/45) and at the Ludwigsgymnasium in Munich (1843/44). After a brief activity as administrator of the Andechs monastery estate (1846–1849), he taught history again at the Mettner grammar school. When he aroused the displeasure of the liberal government with his Guide to Bavarian History for Middle Schools, published in 1867 , he had to give up teaching in 1869.

In the following years he held the offices of novice master, librarian and prior in the monastery. He also worked in the monastery as a theology teacher for the next generation of the order.

Rupert Mittermüller was particularly interested in Bavarian state and church history. In this area he has contributed through numerous researches and publications. In addition, he devoted his research to questions of dogmatics and church legal history.
