Rupert Charles Ponsonby, 7th Baron de Mauley (born June 30, 1957 ) is a British peer and politician of the Conservative Party .

He attended Eton College . In 1976 he joined the Territorial Army . He was serving as an officer and had reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel by the time he retired from the military in 2005.

After the death of his uncle Gerald John Ponsonby, 6th Baron de Mauley in October 2002, he inherited his title of nobility. On March 10, 2005 he won a by-election to reoccupy a Conservative seat in the House of Lords . He was the first hereditary peer to gain a seat in the House of Lords under the House of Lords Act 1999 .

He is currently Parliamentary Secretary of State for the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, replacing John Taylor, Baron Taylor of Holbeach , who has moved to the Home Office .

He is married to Lucinda, the younger daughter of the late Anthony Royle, Baron Fanshawe of Richmond . The couple have no children.
