High Kirk Mausoleum

The High Kirk Mausoleum is a mausoleum on the grounds of the High Kirk in Rothesay , the capital of the Scottish island of Bute . It is located at the south end of the city, west of the church building. In 1971 the mausoleum was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest category A. The exact time of construction of the mausoleum is not recorded, so that only the late 18th century can be given as the construction period. In the course of laying an underground power line, the foundation and the surrounding area were archaeologically examined in 2006. When the building was inspected in 2008, its condition was classified as poor.

description

The one-story building, made of red sandstone , has a rectangular floor plan. It combines features of different architectural styles, namely the Baroque , Neo-Gothic and Classicism . The building is entered through an ornate wooden door on the west side with pilasters on both sides and a segmental arch- shaped crown . The gable surfaces of the gable roof are decorated with triangular gables . The opposite side of the building has a similar structure, but the door has been replaced by a pilaster-framed lancet triple window. The north and south sides have no windows or doors and are only divided in the middle by a blind pillar. The facade surfaces between the pillars and decorations are plastered and whitewashed using the traditional Harling technique. The roof is covered with gray shingles.
