The Rupp AG is an Austrian food companies in the field of cheese production. In 2008 the company achieved sales of EUR 110 million with a total of 380 employees. It is the largest cheese producer in Vorarlberg and is completely family-owned. In 2018, the annual turnover grew to 187 million euros and a workforce of 630.

history

The company's founder , Josef Rupp , went into business for himself in 1908 after attending the dairy school in Rütti-Zollikofen, Switzerland. After the kuk cheese dairy school in Doren, he was one of the first to start producing Emmental cheese in the Swiss way in Austria . In 1912 Rupp took over the Doren state cheese-making school.

In the 1920s he exported Emmentaler to Italy, Belgium, North Africa and America. The beginning of processed cheese production in the mid-1930s allowed the family business to grow further through increasing exports. In 1938, the processed cheese factory built by Rupp shortly before in Lochau near Bregenz was expropriated and handed over to the Alma farmers' cooperative. In 1947, Rupp prevailed in restitution proceedings against the Alma.

At the beginning of 2008, the Rupp private cheese dairy took over the “Alma” cooperative in Hard. After Alma became aware of a balance sheet hole in the autumn of 2007 , it turned out that the necessary capital for new investments was not available. On January 21, 2008, the members of the cooperative voted 97% to sell the production and the “Alma” brand to Rupp AG, which took place on February 18, 2008. "Alma" has only been marketing since then. During the same period, a new company headquarters was built in Hörbranz .

On September 30, 2013, Rupp took over the French processed cheese manufacturer Société Industrielle Fromagère SAS from the Dutch dairy group Royal FrieslandCampina with the aim of expanding the production and sale of cheese in France.

In May 2019, another "Doren Huban" dairy was taken over for the company's own mountain dairy farms (Hinteregg, Lutzenreute and Schnepfau). RUPP AG thus consists of the companies SUR, Schreiber & RUPP Lindenberg GmbH, RUPP Lindenberg GmbH, RUPP & DaChan, SIF and operates five of its own stores in Vorarlberg.

One of Rupp AG's products is “Enzian cheese spread”, a soft cheese that is packed into individual corners.

The company exports up to 90% outside of Austria. Processed and natural cheese are supplied to over 65 countries. The products are marketed under the RUPP, ALMA and own brands .

criticism

In the Black Book of Agriculture , Rupp is criticized for having received EU agricultural subsidies of one million euros in 2008, while the company's tax payments amounted to 11,000 euros in the same period.
