Russ Whitman

Russ Whitman (actually Russell Whitman ) is an American jazz musician ( saxophone and clarinet , vocals ) of hot jazz . He plays all types of saxophones (alto, tenor, soprano, baritone, bass).

Live and act

Whitman grew up in Chicago and studied physics at Harvard University in the early 1960s (where he also received his doctorate), but was already playing old-time jazz at that time , which he continued alongside his professional life. Whitman was a full-time physics teacher and computer programmer until his retirement. After retiring, he moved from Chicago to Ansonia, Connecticut .

Since 1972 he has been involved in over 30 albums as a musician (often in the Chicago Jazz Band of the music professor, Jelly Roll Morton specialist and pianist James Dapogny , in which he played clarinet and tenor and baritone saxophone, but also excelled as a singer) and has Played at numerous old-time jazz festivals in the USA.

In 1971 he won the Rising Star Award from Down Beat critic Polls in the category of various instruments for playing the bass saxophone.

In 1982 he accompanied Sippie Wallace on her album Sippie (which was nominated for a Grammy ). He currently plays in the Galvanized Jazz Band , which consists of musicians from the Connecticut area.
