James Dapogny

James Elliot Dapogny (born September 3, 1940 in Berwyn , Illinois - † March 6, 2019 ) was an American jazz pianist , band leader and musicologist .

Act

From 1976 Dapogny led an ensemble called The Chicago Jazz Band (including with Russ Whitman ), which played with Sippie Wallace and the Chenille Sisters and had appearances in the Prairie Home Companion . He taught at the University of Michigan from 1966 , where he received his doctorate on compositions by Luigi Dallapiccola in 1971 and has been professor of music theory since 1989. In 2006 he retired. Dapogny wrote a book and several articles about the composer and performer Jelly Roll Morton , as well as the liner notes for his Library of Congress recordings; he was also the editor of the Jazz Masterworks Editions , a series of Oberlin College and the Smithsonian Institution . In the field of jazz he was involved in 15 recording sessions between 1975 and 2011, including a. also with Doc Cheatham , Bob Schulz , Keith Nichols , Marty Grosz ( James P. Johnson Songbook ) and Maria Muldaur ( Naughty Bawdy & Blue ).
