Russell Meiggs

Russell Meiggs (born October 20, 1902 in London , † June 24, 1989 ) was a British ancient historian .

Meiggs came from a poor background and attended Christ's Hospital School in Sussex , where William Hamilton Fyfe was his formative teacher. He then studied at Keble College , Oxford , where HMD Parker was his tutor. He graduated in 1925 and went to the British School at Rome on a scholarship . He then taught for two years as a teacher at Christ's Hospital. In 1928 he became a tutor and in 1930 a fellow at Keble College. From 1939 until his retirement in 1969 he taught Ancient History as a tutor and fellow at Balliol College , Oxford. Since 1961 he was a member of the British Academy and since 1981 of the American Philosophical Society . In 1941 he married the historian Pauline Gregg (1909-2006).

His most important and best known book deals with the ancient Ostia .
